Hey reader,
It’s 1st of July, when the weather is pretty as well as ugly. Pretty when it rains, or there’s a blanket of clouds over your head with a cool breeze playing with your hair, and becomes ugly when it keeps raining, with traffic jams and overcrowded metros. Funny it is, that there is balance here as well! The good and the bad.
What today I am going to talk about is one word, which has been in mind of every successful scientist, businessman, philosopher and every other successful human. And the word is WHY! Interesting fact is, we all also have this word in out mind. Remember all those Why always me? Why always this happens to me? Why doesn’t things happen the way I supposed them to happen? And this one for sure, why doesn’t he/she likes me?
The difference between us and the successful people is very little but the results are very enormous. Successful people don’t use it after performing any action. They use it before doing anything. Why you do what you do? The question that just makes all the difference!
“There are two great days in a person’s life – the day we are born and the day we discover WHY.”
William Barclay
Recently, I was reading a book “Start with Why” by Simon Sinek, and it is all about the Golden Circle of Why, How and What. Even though, the book is mostly about the Business Strategies but many of it’s parts are adaptable to our daily life.
The Golden Circle is as follows :
Why, i.e. the motive and purpose, is at the innermost circle. How, i.e. the process, is the second circle from centre. What, i.e. the actual task, is at the outermost circle.
Now, the question is why this matters?
We all are doing/have done the Graduation in respective fields. When we cleared our School/Diploma Examinations, what was it we first thought about next thing? More than 90% of us would have thought, okay so my schooling/ diploma is over, now it’s time for college/graduation, which is a what. How many of us would have thought about WHY?? Just because society, guardians and parents said to go for college, we agreed and started for it? Many of us opt for Engineering. Ever thought before filling the Engineering Application Form WHY you want to do it? Just because the world is doing, you should also do it. And then? Somehow manage to clear semesters and figure out that you are good in acting, modelling, singing, management, music and the list is endless. Now what? All messed up? Just think if you would have thought about WHY in the first place, how simpler things would have been.

“He who has a why to live can bear almost any how.”
Friedrich Nietzsche
That’s why the Golden Circle is important. It says, the very first thing to do or start with anything in life is WHY. Figure out why you want to do what you are going to do.
Let’s take Engineering example again. One who has great interest in science and engineering, while filling the application form, think about WHY Engineering? It can be that he wants to design the most efficient engine, or powerful calculator, or smartest mobile application, etc. For these, he needs to study about engineering. He has a clear understanding of WHY now, i.e. to engineer something. Next thing, according to Golden Circle is HOW. Now, how can he design the most efficient engine, or powerful calculator, or smartest mobile application? By understanding the technologies and performing the various tests under guidance of professionals. For that he needs to start by doing Engineering and when becomes Graduate Engineer, get a job in his respective field. Now this is HOW he will proceed for his WHY. And in the end, when he keeps sticks to his WHY and keep following his HOW, he will be able to reach what, becoming an Efficient Engineer who would be designing the most efficient engine, or powerful calculator, or smartest mobile application. Thats how it goes.
This is just one example, if you read that book, which I would recommend, you will find numerous more examples of greatest successful leaders, who found the Why, focussed on How by sticking with Why and did What they wanted to do.
“Millions saw the apple fall, but Newton was the one who asked why.”
Bernard Baruch
This rule is very highly adaptable. We talked about one aspect that is career, now lets talk about it in another aspect, relationships.
You want to make your relationships with people stronger, interactive and long lasting. This is WHAT. Now just pick any one person, and think WHY, you want such relationship with that person? My life has gifted me with several special people about whom I keep talking here, be it my father, family, amazing person, or best adviser, but there are many more, and out of them is this friend. We don’t talk much, hardly for sometime in an year and many people would suggest of how helpful is this sort of friendship. But I WANT to have that strong friendship relationship with this person. So I know WHAT. Now WHY? Because, I know, no matter what happens or who we become, I know a single text of well being will be enough for us to bring back again and talk like never ever happened. I know What, I know Why, now how?? Our life will keep on bringing some incidents which we would like to share to some specific people only. So when it comes, just pack off your EGO and send it to vacation, and call/ping/text to that person. Truth is, reply will always come. So the Golden Circle works here too.
It’s been many blogs, with no tasks.. Just think about the WHY of your life. WHY you wake up and get out of your bed and do whatever you do throughout the day? Think about it, and find out the HOW if you get the WHY. Would love to see your views about the Golden Circle down here.
Cheers!
“You see things; and you say -Why? But I dream things that never were; and I say -Why not?”
George Bernard
